【Getting to work】

    I find that travel by bus in Xi'an can be a bit tough. In the morning I often go from the SW to the North of the city by bus and Subway. First there’s the cold, morning walk over the footbridge to the bus stop. There are lots of busses, but they’re all jam packed. I squeeze my way on board. At least its warm on the bus. Then there’s the challenge of hanging onto the hand holds with the bus lurching in all directions. I only have three stops so right away I have to start wriggling towards the back otherwise I won’t be able to get off in time. Then I walk 5 minutes to the Subway.

    The Subway is smoother and its quite comfortable, as long as I can get a seat. 20 minutes standing on the train isn’t my idea of fun. So I stand near some passengers who look like they might get off soon. If I get a seat my next challenge is to stay awake so I don’t miss my stop. At the stop I go up to the street, check the time. If nothing went wrong I usually have a few minutes extra to buy a cup of coffee and relax before the 10 minute walk to my class.

    My whole journey takes about an hour. There’s one really great thing about it – its really cheap.

    Well I recently bought a new camera so I guess I like taking photos. My new camera is mirrorless, which means it takes pictures directly through the lens instead of using a reflection. Anyway it takes very clear pictures with a lot of detail. Also it is quite small and light so it is quite convenient to carry.

    Mostly I take pictures of friends. I find its better to take them by surprise. If people pose for pictures you often get the same face – a smile or maybe their favorite funny face. But people really have many different faces depending on how they are feeling. Surprise pictures can be so much more interesting. I am trying to train my friends to accept my habit of taking surprise pictures. Unfortunately its not working so far because they tend to get mad at me for waving a camera around all the time.

    I see that selfies have also become very popular. My arms are not long enough for a good selfie so I need to get one of those selfie sticks. For a good selfie you can add in some friends, remember which side the light comes from and make sure there is a good background. Then you can post your selfie online and everyone can enjoy it.
